For comforting ramen in Singapore

When people ask me what is my favourite food, I find it difficult to answer them because I like too many things and my list changes with time. However, one thing that has been consistent on my favourite food list is always ramen. So here's a list of ramen places I love and will always want to return to for more in the future (in no order of preference again)!

1. Tsukada Nojo

There are three main flavours of ramen here with shoyu ($16.80), shio ($17) and hokkaido miso butter ($18). You also get to choose your noodle texture from thin tsuru noodles, thick mochi noodles and beauty noodles. With collagen-based broth, there is a rich flavour when eating their ramen too. Also, they serve the soup and the ingredients separately so you get to taste the original flavour of the soup before adding everything in too.

After trying all three flavours, my favourite is the hokkaido miso butter with the thick mochi noodles because of the richness of the soup coupled with chewy springy noodles.

tsukada nojo chicken nanban

Their chicken nanban is good too, now there's an option to add it to your ramen to make it a set meal and that makes me very happy.

2. Ramen Dining Keisuke Tokyo

I generally like ramen from all the restaurants in the Keisuke group (yes I've been to them all) but this is my favourite because it has the spicy pork miso flavour! Apart from the usual ingredients such as cha shu, ramen egg and seaweed, it also has spicy minced pork in it as well! A bowl with flavoured egg coasts $15.90 while a bowl with special toppings is $18.90. I love how my ramen is so customisable here in terms of toppings, ramen texture and soup flavour as well!

3. Gonpachi Ramen

Situated in Kovan, this place offers ramen at affordable prices (less than $8). The ramen here is considered good for the price paid and the flavours are quite unique as well. This is the smoked duck ramen, it's really fragrant and goes really well with the soup too.

4. Marutama Ramen

Marutama serves delicious chicken paitan (white soup) broth ramen and I especially like the Aka ramen ($15) which has 7 types of nuts and chicken meatballs plus it is slightly spicy too! They also have good egg rolls or dashimaki ($7) that go really well with the grated radish served with it. Different outlets have different products available so it's best that you check it out online before heading down to eat!

5. Buta Kin

Located in Beauty World food centre, this stall also sells ramen at affordable prices. I tried the special tonkotsu ramen ($7.90) and I thought that the soup was made lighter (than what I had in Japan) to suit the tastes of SIngapreans more. It's definitely value for money and there is more quality than what I paid for which made me very happy.

6. Kajiken

Kajiken is a restaurant dedicated to mazesoba (directly translated to mixed noodles), a type of dry ramen. They have a variety of ingredient combinations and you get to adjust how your ramen tastes like by providing condiments. The taste of the noodles are distinct and they have a springy texture too! This is the original mazesoba with karaage ($16.30) and the taste was pretty light but still tasty.

7. Hakata Ikkousha

Hakata Ikkousha serves tonkotsu ramen and their broths here remind me very much of the ramen I have eaten in Fukuoka. The ramen here is also very customisable where you fill in a form to indicate your preferences. Also, if you visit on your birthday, you get free gyoza that is the same number as your age! Their gyozas are good too, I always order them when I visit.

This is the tonkotsu mentaiko with flavoured egg ($16). The broth is rich and slightly spicy due to the mentaiko!

8. A Noodle Story

This stall in Amoy Street Food Centre only has one type of ramen, the Singapore style ramen. There is usually a long queue on weekdays during the lunch hours because they prepare each bowl on demand! It is quite similar to Singapore's wanton noodles but the noodles are ramen noodles. At $7 or $9 per bowl, you get cha shu. Hong Kong-style wanton, crispy potato wrapped prawn and hot spring egg together with the springy noodles. I really enjoyed it during my visit here and will definitely return again (actually I would for all the ramen places in this post).

9. Kanshoku Ramen

Famous for their truffle ramen, Kanshoku ramen is a must try for truffle and ramen lovers!

kanshoku truffle dry ramen

They have truffle ramen in both the dry and soup form but I personally prefer the dry ramen ($16.90) because the truffle taste is more distinct!

kanshoku ramen yuzu

They also serve yuzu ramen ($14.90) which is relatively new on their menu! The soup is quite light and complements the yuzu very well!
